In a manner similar to that described in Example XXVI, 3.63 grams (10 millimoles) of [2-(3-benzhydrylpiperidino)-2-oxoethoxy]acetic acid (Example VIII), 150 milliliters of methanol and 300 milligrams of methanesulfonic acid are stirred together for about six hours at ambient temperature. Thereafter, the methanol is evaporated, the residue dissolved in ether, the ether solution washed, dried and the solvent evaporated to obtain a methyl [2-(3-benzhydrylpiperidino)-2-oxoethoxy]acetate product as residue.
