Procedure
A mixture of furo[3,4-b]pyridine-5,7-dione (2.0 g, 13.41 mmol) and benzene-1,2-diamine (1.45 g, 13.41 mmol) in 20 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) was heated to 100° C. for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness, the obtained residue taken up in 15 mL of dichloromethane and stirred for 30 minutes at 5° C. Filtration with suction and drying gave 1.0 g of a red solid, which was used further without additional purification.
