Procedure

Potassium (S)-oxirane-2-carboxylate LVIII (0.63 g, 5 mmol) and hydrazine hydrate (2.57 g, 51 mmol) were heated at 95° C. for 3 days. Hydrazine and water were removed and the residue was dried at 40° C. under vacuum to produce potassium (S)-3-hydrazinyl-2-hydroxypropanoate LIX (0.75 g), which was used without purification in the next step. ESIMS found for C3H7N2O3K m/z 119 (M)−.
