Procedure

1-(1,2,3,4-Tetrahydro-2,8-dimethylpyrido[4,3-b]indol-5-yl)-3-methyl-2-(pyridin-4-yl)butan-2-ol (0.2 g, 0.55 mmol) was dissolved in dry DCM and a drop of DMF was added. The solution was cooled to 0° C. and thionyl chloride (0.194 g, 1.65 mmoL) dissolved in dry DCM (1 mL) was added. Stirring was continued for 1 h at 0° C. and for 2 h at RT. Volatiles were removed under reduced pressure, the residue was basified with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate, and the product was extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL). The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by reverse phase HPLC. 1H NMR (CD3OD, TFA salt) δ (ppm): 8.42 (d, 2H), 7.50 (d, 2H), 7.12 (s, 1H), 7.10 (d, 1H), 6.90 (d, 1H), 5.22 (d, 2H), 4.60 (d, 1H), 4.22 (d, 1H), 3.82 (m, 1H), 3.50 (m, 1H), 3.16 (m, 2H), 3.05 (s, 3H), 2.38 (s, 3H), 2.20 (s, 3H), 1.65 (s, 3H).
