To a solution of ethyl 2-amino-5-methylpyridine-3-carboxylate (368 mg) in DMF (20 mL) were added pyridine (0.66 mL) and 2-chloroethanesulfonyl chloride (0.32 mL), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hr. To the reaction mixture were added water (50 mL) and sodium carbonate (1 g), sodium chloride was saturated and the mixture was extracted 3 times with ethyl acetate. The extracts were collected, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (methanol/ethyl acetate) to give the title compound (111 mg) as a brown solid.
