A 250 ml round bottom flask equipped with magnetic stir bar, reflux condenser, and N2 inlet was charged with 9.2 g methyl N-acetyl-3-[(1-propylbutyl)sulfonyl]alaninate in 50 ml acetic acid and 50 ml conc. HCl. The solution was refluxed for 4 hours then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was chased with toluene (2×) then vacuum dried overnight to yield 7.8 g of the desired 3-[(1-propylbutyl)sulfonyl]alanine HCl salt.
