PROCEDURE

Synthesized according to General Procedure B: 8 (5.33 g, 26.4 mmol, 1 equiv.), ethyl chloroacetate (3.1 mL, 29.0 mmol, 1.1 equiv.), NaHCO3 (2.77 g, 33.0 mmol, 1.25 equiv.), acetone (52.8 mL), chloroform (30.0 mL). Purification with flash column chromatography on silica gel (1:1 hexanes:EtOAc) afforded 9 (3.31 g, 70%) as an orange oil. 1H-NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.35 (d, 2H, J=8.0 Hz), 7.26 (d, 2H, J=8.0 Hz), 6.69 (dd, 1H, J=11.0, 17.5 Hz), 5.72 (dd, 1H, J=0.5, 17.5 Hz), 5.21 (dd, 1H, J=1.0, 11.0 Hz), 4.17 (q, 2H, J=7.0 Hz), 3.49 (s, 2H), 3.19 (s, 2H), 2.59 (br s, 4H), 2.52 (br s, 4H), 1.26 (t, 3H, J=7.0 Hz). 13C-NMR (125 MHz, CDCl3): δ 170.2, 137.7, 136.5, 136.4, 129.3, 126.0, 113.4, 62.6, 60.5, 59.5, 53.0, 52.7, 14.2.
