A solution of methyl 4-methoxy-3-oxo-2-{[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]hydrazono}butanoate (14.0 g, 44 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal (100 mL) was refluxed for 4 h. After cooling to room temperature, the precipitate was collected by filtration and washed with hexane/AcOEt (3/1) to give the title compound (12.9 g, 89% yield) as off-white crystals: mp 169-170° C.;
