To a solution of 6-bromo-2H-1-benzopyran-3(4H)-one (300 mg, 1.13 mmol) in toluene (2 mL) was added ethyleneglycol (163 mg 2.64 mmol) and para-toluenesulfonic acid (27 mg, 0.13 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at 100° C. for 6 hrs. The reaction mixture was cooled and the solvent concentrated. The resultant residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic phase was washed with water, brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under vacuum to give the title compound (290 mg, 79% yield) as a solid.
