In a bottle, 1-(5-bromo-2-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone (25 g, 0.02 mol), 3-chlorobenzaldehyde (16.35 g, 0.12 mol), EtOH (96%, 144 mL) and NaOH (42.1 g, 1.06 mol) were combined. The mixture was stirred vigorously for 0.5 h. 2-Methoxy-2-methylpropane (300 mL) was added and the mixture was filtered. The filtrate was poured into HCl (1 N, 800 mL) and filtered to give 1-(5-bromo-2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(3-chlorophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (23.47 g, 60%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3): 6.88 (d, 1H), 4.35 (m, 2H), 7.49 (m, 3H), 7.61 (s, 1H), 7.80 (m, 1H), 7.93 (m, 1H), 12.56 (s, 1H).
