To a solution of 7-bromobenzo[b]oxepin-5(2H)-one (1.33 g, 5.6 mmol), CuBr—SMe2 (60 mg, 0.3 mmol) and HMPA (2.058 g, 11.5 mmol) in THF (30 mL) was added phenylmagnesium bromide (3.0 M, 3.7 mL) at −78, the mixture was stirred at −78 for 1 hour. The mixture was quenched by HCl (10%, 5 mL), extracted with ethoxyethane, and then washed with NaHCO3, brine, dried over Na2SO4, concentrated and purified by column chromatography to give 7-bromo-3-phenyl-3,4-dihydrobenzo[b]oxepin-5(2H)-one (300 mg, 17%). 1H-NMR(CH2D2): 3.11 (m, 2H), 3.49 (m, 1H), 4.28 (m, 2H), 6.93 (m, 1H), 7.17 (m, 1H), 7.23 (m, 4H), 7.45 (m, 1H), 7.83 (m, 1H)
