Procedure
To a solution of 12 (3 g, 9.5 mmol) in anhydrous ether (50 mL) was added diethyl zinc (1.0 M solution in hexane, 24.2 mL, 28.6 mmol) followed by diiodomethane (4.6 mL, 57.3 mmol) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was allowed to room temperature and was refluxed for 8 hr. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C. and quenched with saturated NH4Cl solution (20 mL) and extracted with ether (2×60 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water (30 mL), brine (30 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography (5% EtOAc/hexane) to afford 13 (3.0 g, 93%) as an oil. [α]24D −86.03° (c 2.01, CHCl3); 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ 4.55 (m, 1H), 4.49 (m, 1H), 4.08 (m, 1H), 3.59 (dd, J=3.0 & 9.5 Hz), 3.50 (dd, J=4.5 & 10.5 Hz, 1H), 2.22 (d, J=10.5 Hz, D2O exchange OH, 1H), 1.57 (m, 1H), 1.44 (s, 3H), 1.31 (s, 3H), 0.84 (m, 10H), 0.43 (m, 1H), 0.32 (m, 1H), 0.24 (1H), −0.06 (s, 6H). 13C NMR (125 MHz, CDCl3) 159.01, 115.9, 115.4, 86.85, 84.85, 79.48, 71.63, 57.21, 32.13, 31.54, 30.33, 29.24 23.83, 7.14, 0.015; HR-MS Calcd.
