Procedure
A mixture of 500 mg (1.8 mmol) 2-bromo-1-(4-bromophenyl)ethanone and 520 mg (3.8 mmol) 2-methoxybenzylamine in 100 mL diethyl ether was stirred for 2 hr at room temperature. The resulting precipitate was then filtered, and the filtrate was combined with 1 M isopropanolic HCl and diluted with diethyl ether. The precipitate thus obtained was filtered and used in the subsequent step without further purification.
