Reaction Steps
2.7 g (11 mmol) N-[4-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-imidazole-2-yl]acetamide was taken up in 30 mL EtOH, combined with 50 mL 50% hydrochloric acid, and stirred for 3 hr under reflux. The batch was made alkaline with 6 M NaOH and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was dried (MgSO4) [and] concentrated. The residue (0.9 g) was further used without purification.
