Procedure

A mixture of 4-(4-nitrophenyl)-1H-imidazole-2-ylamine (0.9 g, 4.4 mmol), 2-methoxybenzyl chloride (0.69 g, 4.4 mmol), and Cs2CO3 (1.6 g, 4.9 mmol) in dimethylformamide was stirred for 18 hr at room temperature. The batch was combined with 50% sodium chloride solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed several times with water and saturated sodium chloride solution and concentrated, and the residue was purified on silica gel using methylene chloride/methanol 50:1 (100 mg of a red solid).
