A mixture of 1-benzyl-5-hydroxy-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-[1,7]naphthyridine-6-carboxylic acid methyl ester (100 mg, 0.32 mmol) and sodium glycinate (626 mg, 6.45 mmol) in 2-methoxyethanol (10 mL) was refluxed for 2 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was dissolved in saturated NaHCO3. The aqueous phase was washed with ether, and then acidified to pH about 2 with 4M HCl. The resulting suspension was extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give 84 mg of the title compound as a pale yellow solid. MS: (+) m/z 354.02 (M+1).
