In a manner analogous to that described in Example 19(B)(ii), from (1R)-1-[(N-benzyloxycarbonyl-N-methyl-L-alanyl-L-alanyl-L-alanyl)amino]-ethylphosphonic acid, but carrying out the hydrogenation in aqueous ethanol instead of aqueous methanol, there was obtained (1R)-1-(N-methyl-L-alanyl-L-alanyl-L-alanylamino)-ethylphosphonic acid of melting point 318°-320° C. (decomposition); [α]D20 =-121°; [α]36520 =-418° (c=0.5% in water).
