The above-prepared pyrimidine-1-acetate product of paragraph (2) (1.60 g), 6 mL of acetic acid and 2 mL of hydrochloric acid were mixed followed by heating to reflux for two hours. After concentration, it was heated to reflux for two hours more with 6 mL of acetic acid and 2 mL of hydrochloric acid. The solvent was evaporated therefrom and the residue was washed with water and recrystallized from ethanol to give 1.39 g of 3-(3-nitrobenzyl)-2,4-dioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-1-acetic acid [Compound 16] as white crystals. The melting point, MS, IR, NMR, and elementary analysis for the compound were:
