A solution of 5-cyano-7-isothiocyanato-8-methylquinoline (0.85 g) in toluene (100 mL) is added dropwise to a solution of ethylenediamine (1.94 g) in toluene (100 mL). A yellow-white precipitate is observed after the reaction stirs at room temperature for 10 minutes. The precipitate is filtered and dried in vacuo to afford 7-[N'-(2-aminoethyl)thioureido]-5-cyano-8-methylquinoline as a yellow-white solid.
