84.5 g of 8-cyanooctanoic acid dissolved in 500 ml of isopropyl alcohol saturated with NH3 are hydrogenated at 50° C. and 80 bar for 3 hours, using 20 g of cobalt-Raney as catalyst. The catalyst is filtered out and the solution is concentrated. Cooling and purification produce 9-aminononanoic acid (80 g) in the form of a crystalline solid product with a m.p. of 190-192° C.
