Fluorochemical sulfinates can be prepared by deiodosulfination of the corresponding iodides following the general procedure of Hu et al. in J. Org. Chem., Vol. 56, No. 8, 1991, page 2803. The fluorochemical sulfinates C4F9SO2Na and C6F13SO2Na were prepared by reduction of the corresponding sulfonyl fluorides C4F9SO2F and C6F13SO2F with Na2SO3 in a one to one mixture of water and dioxane. See also, U.S. Pat. No. 5,285,002, supra. The purity of these fluorochemical sulfinates, as determined by 19F NMR analysis, was about 90%.
