Procedure
About 2.05 g of compound 3a (m=6) was dissolved in a mixture of methanol (90 ml) and water (10 ml). About 1.6 g of solid potassium carbonate (K2CO3) was added and the reaction mixture was refluxed for 2.5 h. After removal of most of the methanol, 50 ml of 1N HCl was added to the reaction mixture. The precipitate formed was filtered and washed with water, yielding the phenol 4a (1.34 g, 87%).
