32(iii) 3-(2,4-Dimethoxy-5-formylphenyl)octanoic acid Methyl 3-(2,4-dimethoxy-5-formylphenyl)octanoate [prepared as described in step (ii) above] was hydrolyzed in a similar manner to that described in Preparation 7 to give the title compound as crystals, melting at 110°-111.5° C. (from ethyl acetate-hexane).
