A mixture of 4-benzyl-4-hydroxy-piperidine (0.62 g, 3.3 mmol), 1-(2-bromoethoxy)-4-(phenylmethoxy)-benzene (1.0 g, 3.3 mmol) and potassium carbonate (0.9 g, 6.5 mmol) in 2-butanone (15 ml) was refluxed overnight. It was cooled to room temperature, 30 ml of H2O were added and the organic phase was separated. The water phase was extracted two times with ethyl acetate. The organic phases were then pooled, dried with Na2SO4 and the solvent evaporated to give 4-benzyl-1-[2-(4-benzyloxy-phenoxy)-ethyl]-piperidin-4-ol as a yellowish solid (1.35 g, 99%). MS: m/e=418.4 (M+H+).
