Procedure
To a stirred, cold mixture (-25° C.) of 1-(3-hydroxy-propyl)-2-methyl-5-fluoro-1H -benzimidazole (1.99 gm), triethylamine (1.47 ml) and methylenechloride (40 ml) is dropwise added a solution of methanesulfonylchloride (0.96 ml) in 15 ml CH2Cl2. After complete addition, the mixture is warmed to ambient temperature, extracted with water (2×20 ml), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to a thick brown oil consisting of crude 1-(3-methanesulfonyloxy-propyl)-2-methyl-5-fluoro-1H -benzimidazole.
