To a solution of the ester from Step 1 (2.7 g, 7 mmol) in THF (20 mL) at 0° C. there was added diisobutyl aluminum hydride (1M) in toluene (17 mL, 17 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hour, then quenched with methanol (10 mL). Ethyl acetate and 1N aqueous HCl were added and after collection of the organic phase the aqueous phase was extracted once more with ethyl acetate. The combined organic extracts, after washing with water three times and drying over Na2SO4, afforded on evaporation a yellow residue which was triturated with ether to afford the title compound as a yellow solid, mp: 102-104° C.
