A mixture of 4-hydroxy-7-methyl-2-oxo-2H-thiochromene-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (80 mg, 0.32 mmol) and sodium glycinate (310 mg, 3.2 mmol) in 2-methoxyethanol (10 mL) was refluxed for 3 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated and the crude residue dissolved in water (50 mL), acidified to pH 3-4 using 1 N HCl and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to provide [(4-hydroxy-7-methyl-2-oxo-2H-thiochromene-3-carbonyl)-amino]-acetic acid (89 mg). MS ESI(−) m/e: 292.12 (M−1).
