Procedure
A mixture of methyl 3-oxovalerate (75.0 g, 576 mmol), ammonium acetate (222 g, 2.88 mmol) and methanol (750 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 3 days. After concentration under reduced pressure, and water (500 mL) was added to the residue and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (200 mL). The extract was washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, concentrated under reduced pressure, and dried to give the title compound (68.5 g, 92%) as a pale-yellow oil.
