Sodium methanethiolate (4.36 g, 62.30 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of ethyl 1-((methylsulfonyloxy)methyl)cyclopropanecarboxylate (6.92 g, 31.10 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (62.30 mL) at 23° C. The resulting brown suspension was stirred at 23° C. for 18 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with diethyl ether. The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated by rotary evaporation to afford the title compound as a brown oil (5.43 g, 100%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 4.14 (q, J=7 Hz, 2H), 2.83 (s, 2H), 2.16 (s, 3H), 1.31 (dd, J=7, 4 Hz, 2H), 1.25 (t, J=7 Hz, 3H), 0.89 (dd, J=7, 4 Hz, 2H).
