Procedure

Imidazole (5.4 g) and tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (3.98 g) were added to a solution of ethyl 4-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)-4-hydroxybutanoate (3.8 g) in anhydrous dimethylformamide (25 mL), and stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. Water was added to the reaction mixture, followed by extraction with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with water three times and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. Subsequently, the solvent was distilled off and the residue was purified by basic silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane:ethyl acetate=20:1→10:1) to obtain 5.3 g of ethyl 4-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-4-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)butanoate with a quantitive yield.
