A mixture of 1-(3-Trifluoromethyl-benzyl)-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid (6-amino-2,4-dioxo-3-propyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-pyrimidin-5-yl)-amide (30 g, 0.068 mol), P2O5 (34.0 g, 0.240.8 mol) and DMF (300 ml) were heated at 100° C. for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was cooled to 20-25° C. The reaction mixture was slowly poured into water (1.5 L) with vigorous stirring. Solid material separated was filtered off, and washed with water (200 ml) to obtain 1-Propyl-8-[1-(3-trifluoromethyl-benzyl)-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]-3,7-dihydro-purine-2,6-dione (25 g, 88%) as a pale yellow solid.
