A solution of Example C5 (3 g, 10.9 mmol) in DMF (50 mL) was treated with ZnCN2 (1.7 g, 16.4 mmol) and Pd(PPh3)4 (1.26 g, 1.09 mmol), sparged with N2 and heated at 100° C. for 12 h. The mixture was cooled to RT, treated with water and extracted with EtOAc (3×). The combined organics were washed with brine (3×), dried over Na2SO4, concentrated to dryness and purified via silica gel chromatography (EtOAc/pet ether) to afford ethyl 2-(5-amino-2-cyano-4-fluorophenyl)acetate (600 mg, 25% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ 7.19 (d, J=2.4 Hz, 1H), 6.67 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 4.13-4.11 (q, J=6.8 Hz, 2H), 3.66 (s, 2H), 1.23-1.19 (t, J=6.8 Hz, 3H).
