A mixture of 2-[5-(diethoxymethyl)-1-methyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl]-6-methylpyridine (38 g, 0.1377 mol), water (92 mL) and concentrated HCl (23 mL, 0.276 mol) was heated at 70-80° C. for 2 h. The resulting solution was co-evaporated with water four times using a water aspirator vacuum, then dried in vacuo at 60° C. to give 33.5 g (94.5%) of the title product as a covalently-bound hydrate. Satisfactory C,H,N-analysis was obtained. 1H NMR (400 MHz, D2O+TFA): δ 2.90 (s, 3H), 4.13 (s, 3H), 6.38 (s, 1H), 7.94 (d, J=8 Hz, 1H), 8.37 (d, J=8 Hz, 1H), 8.56 (t, J=8 Hz, 1H). LC-MS (API-ES) calcd for C10H10N4O: 202.09, found (M+H+): 203.1; (M+18+H+) 221.1 m/z.
