To a stirred suspension of 28 g. (0.10 mol.) of 2-benzoyl-3-methylquinoxaline 1,4-dioxide in 1,000 ml. of methanol was added 5.6 ml. (0.11 mol.) of bromine. The reaction mixture was refluxed for 2 hours and then an additional 5.6 ml. (0.11 mol.) of bromine was added. The mixture was refluxed for an additional 2 hours and then it was cooled to 25° C. The solid which had precipitated was collected by filtration, washed with methanol, and dried to affored 30.4 g. (85% yield) of 2-benzoyl-3-bromomethylquinoxaline 1,4-dioxide, m.p. 183°-185° C.
