Procedure

1-Benzyl-4-carboxyethyl-1,2,3-triazole-5-thiol (1.1 g., 4 mmol.) is suspended in 50 ml. of anhydrous liquid ammonia and sodium is added until a permanent blue color results. The reaction mixture is allowed to stir for 40 minutes then allowed to warm to ambient temperature while the ammonia evaporates. The residue is triturated with ether and the solid formed is collected and dissolved in water. The aqueous solution is acidified and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract is dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to dryness to give 4-(2-carboxyethyl)-1,2,3-triazol-5-thiol.
