132 parts of 3-acetylamino-4-methoxybenzenesulfonyl chloride and 25 parts of cyanamide are suspended in 400 parts of water at 0° C. and reacted with one another at a temperature of about 20° C. while a pH between 9 and 11 is maintained. Then 130 parts by volume of 33% strength aqueous sodium hydroxide solution are added and the acetylamino group is hydrolyzed at 100° C. in the course of an hour. The batch is then cooled down to 10° C. and brought to pH 2 with hydrochloric acid and the precipitated 2-methoxy-5-cyanamidosulfonylaniline is isolated.
