Procedure

To a stirred solution of 0.78 g (2.71 mmol) of alcohol (30) and 1.13 g (3.41 mmol) of carbontetrabromide in 10 ml of CH2Cl2 at 0° C. was added 1.07 g (4.08 mmol) of triphenylphosphine. After one hour at 0° C., the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was flash chromatographed on silica, eluting CH2Cl2. After trituration with diethyl ether there was obtained 0.82 g (80% yield) of 1-benzenesulfonyl-4-bromomethyl-1H-indole (31) as a white solid, m.p. 127°-128° C.
