A mixture of ethyl (2,6-dimethyl-3H-pyrimidin-4-on-5yl)acetate (1.13 g, 5.4 mmol), phosphorous oxychloride (10 mL, and N,N-dimethylaniline (1.3 mL, 10.3 mmol) was heated under reflux for 3.5 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated, poured onto ice, and the resulting mixture was extracted with ether. The combined extracts were washed with water, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated to give 1.2 g (98%) of product as a yellow oil.
