27.2 g (109.5 mmol) of ethyl-E-4-(3-methoxyphenyl)-4-methylpent-2-enoate is mixed in 293 ml of ethyl acetate with 2.72 g of palladium on carbon (10%) and stirred under hydrogen atmosphere for 18 hours at room temperature. The catalyst is removed by filtration through a glass-fiber filter, and the residue that remains after the concentration by evaporation (27.2 g=99.2%) is incorporated in crude form into the next stage.
