A mixture of 4-hydroxy-2-methylindole (3.0 g, 0.02 mole), bromo-acetic acid benzyl ester (4.6 g, 0.02 mole), potassium carbonate (2.8 g, 0.02 mole) in acetone was refluxed for 48 h. The reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated. The residue was purified by column chromatography (10:1 Hex:EtOAc) to afford intermediate (2). Yield: 3.5 g, 58%.
