Procedure

A solution of methyl isocyanate (4.1 g; 4.6 ml.) in diethyl ether (20 ml.) was added with stirring to a solution of N-(3-nitro-4-methylphenyl)-hydroxylamine (12.0 g.) in ether (70 ml.) at room temperature over a period of about 10 minutes. The yellow precipitate 1-methyl-3-(3'-nitro-4'-methylphenyl)-3-hydroxyurea which formed was filtered and air dried.
