Procedure

A mixture of 0.80 g (0.0017 moles) of the product obtained in Step C, 0.25 g (0.0027 moles) of paraformaldehyde, 50 mg of p-toluene sulfonic acid monohydrate and 45 mL of acetonitrile was refluxed for 30 minutes. The resulting mixture was partitioned between chloroform and saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate and the aqueous layer was extracted three times with chloroform. The combined organic layers were dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give a yellow solid. The solid was triturated with methanol/water, and dried under vacuum to afford 0.57 g of a yellow solid, m.p. 208°-209° C.
