Procedure
3.25 g of 5-fluoro-2-methoxymethoxybenzyl chloride [prepared as described in step (c) above] were dissolved in 50 ml of toluene, and then 6.25 g of triphenylphosphine were added to the resulting solution. The resulting mixture was then heated under reflux for 6 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction solution was cooled. The resulting crystals were collected by filtration, and dried in vacuo, to give 5.16 g (yield 70%) of the title compound. Separately, the filtrate was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and the crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration, to give an additional 0.75 g (total yield: 80%) of the title compound.
