To a mixture of (2R,3S)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-epoxypropionic acid methyl ester (2.08 g) and N,N-dimethylformamide (3 ml) is added 28% aqueous ammonia (6.1 g) under ice-cooling. The mixture is reacted at room temperature for two hours, and the precipitated crystals are collected by filtration, washed with water, and dried at 50° C. to give (2R,3S)-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,3-epoxypropionamide (1.64 g).
