Procedure
A saturated solution of methylamine in ethanol (50 mL) and N-[[(4,5-dihydro-5-thioxo-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)amino]carbonyl]-L-phenylalanine methyl ester (EXAMPLE 1; 0.770 g, 2.28 mmol) is stirred at room temperature for 6 days. The solution is concentrated, diluted with water, and acidified with 1N HCl. The resultant solids are filtered and dried to give 576 mg of the amide. Recrystallization from hot EtOAc/CH2 Cl2 /MeOH gives 390 mg (51%) of the desired product as a white solid (mp 234°-236° C.).
