Procedure

A mixture of 37% formalin (18 g) and dimethylamine hydrochloride (18 g) was stirred at 25° C. for 30 minutes, and stirred at 70° C. for 30 minutes. The reaction temperature was raised to 80° C., and to the mixture was added dropwise acetic anhydride (80 ml). The reaction mixture was stirred at 80° C. for one hour, and thereto was added 3,4-dihydro-6,7-dimethyl-1(2H)-naphthalenone (26 g). The reaction temperature was raised to 90° C., and the mixture was stirred for 6 hours. The mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to remove the solvent, and to the residue was added acetone. The precipitated crystals were collected by filtration, and washed with acetone to give 2-dimethylaminomethyl-3,4-dihydro-6,7-dimethyl-1(2H)-naphthalenone hydrochloride (39 g).
