Procedure
A mixture of 5,7-difluoro-3,4-dihydro-1(2H)-naphthalenone (3.2 g), glyoxylic acid monohydrate (1.6 g) and 85% phosphoric acid (3 ml) was heated with stirring at 90° C. for four hours. After cooling, water was added to the reaction solution, and the precipitated crystals were collected by filtration, washed with water, and dried to give (5,7-difluoro-3,4-dihydro-1-oxo-2(1H)-naphthalenylidene)acetic acid (4.2).
