Procedure
A solution of ethyl 2-trifluoromethyl-4-hydroxypyrimidine-5-carboxylate (5.00 g, 19.4 mmol) and NaOH (0.93 g, 23.3 mmol) in H2O (20 mL) was stirred at 60° C. for 15 h. The reaction was acidified (conc. HCl) and concentrated until a solid began to form. The solid was filtered and dried to give 2-trifluoromethyl-4-hydroxypyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid (2.1 g, 53% yield); 1HNMR (DMSO-d6) δ 8.83 (s, 1H).
