Reaction Steps

A mixture of 23.2 ml of isoamylamine and 16.17 g of 1-(3-chloropropyl)piperidine was heated to 120° C. for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was then dissolved in 100 ml of ethanol. To this ethanol solution was added 17 ml of conc. hydrochloric acid. The mixture was allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. The precipitated crystals were collected, washed with ethanol, and dried to give 14.70 g of 1-[3-(3-methylbutylamino)propyl]piperidine dihydrochloride as a white crystalline product.
