Procedure

The saponification was performed by the addition of 1.14 mL of 2.0 M LiOH solution to a solution of 0.27 g (0.76 mmole) of ethyl α-[bis(4-fluorophenyl)methylene]-1 H-tetrazole-1-acetate in 5 mL of 95% ethanol at room temperature. After two hours, the crude reaction mixture was diluted with water and washed with diethyl ether (20 mL×2). The free acid in the aqueous layer was regenerated by the addition of aqueous HCl then extracted with diethyl ether, dried and evaporated. The crude acid was dried under high vacuum for 48 hours before it was used in the next step.
